Recently I was hooked on this mini-series on the history of the English language. It turns out the language played a back seat for a while but thanks to its versatility it held on throughout the years. Often as a symbol of rebellion and the common folks’ vernacular, the shapes the language took throughout invasion and change of rule is remarkable. We owe it’s difficulty to the mutt of a language that it is as well as to the traditionalists in the English Chancery. They, in printing national texts and laws, after going English, often chose versions/spellings of the words that weren’t written as they were pronounced but stayed true to their various roots (of which there are many). Many initial texts, even the first prints of the Bible, are the first time it is believed certain spellings and many new words were chosen/added into everyday use.

I’ve been inspired. Write on, speak on, and read on. Story sharing, adaptability, the Bible, and rebellion should all be something to be inspired by.

A fun poem Continue reading »

wide stance

1. Code for being gay.

derived: From Senator Larry Craig, who claimed his wide stance cause him to “bump feet” with the police officer.

usage: “Mike’s just not into you Sheila… He’s got a wide stance.”

Thanks to Logo and their New Gay Dictionary.

And if you missed the story a while ago here is an article from CNN.

DICEWARS

We all know the board game RISK© and it’s glorious multi-hour world domination adventure. Often, multiple hours are hard to come by, but the urge to dominate the world and exercise your strategic muscle doesn’t fade. It could just be the geeky strategy game player speaking, but DICEWARS has filled a growing need since the gay-RISK nights during college, a useful creation, have since ended. Dice become your armies but continuity of land ownership is still apart of the strategy in this smaller map and up to eight “players,” computer(s) and yourself, take on the classic board game.

It isn’t the multi-player amazingness that you can play with your friends but it will provide for a simple five minute to half an hour distraction amidst your workday, study for finals, or crazy unemployed livelihood.

Check it out, play it, and share what it kept you from doing/completing during your day. I owe the absence of a log of student volunteer hours and probably a blog entry or two to the joys of this dice rolling battle on my computer screen.

A classic that doesn’t bode well on sexual rights. Think twice the next time you hear that “it’s cold outside.”
The dash (-) represents the split of conversation in the song.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” lyrics:

I really can’t stay - Baby it’s cold outside
I’ve got to go away - Baby it’s cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you’d drop in
So very nice - I’ll hold your hands, they’re just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what’s your hurry
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I’d better scurry - Beautiful, please don’t hurry
well Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some music on while I pour

The neighbors might think - Baby, it’s bad out there
Say, what’s in this drink - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I’ll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no, sir - Mind if I move a little closer
At least I’m gonna say that I tried - What’s the sense in hurting my pride
I really can’t stay - Baby don’t hold out
Ahh, but it’s cold outside

C’mon baby

I simply must go - Baby, it’s cold outside
The answer is no - Ooh baby, it’s cold outside
This welcome has been - I’m lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm — Look out the window at that storm
My sister will be suspicious - Man, your lips look so delicious
My brother will be there at the door - Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious - Gosh your lips look delicious
Well maybe just a half a drink more - Never such a blizzard before

I’ve got to go home - Oh, baby, you’ll freeze out there
Say, lend me your comb - It’s up to your knees out there
You’ve really been grand - Your eyes are like starlight now
But don’t you see - How can you do this thing to me
There’s bound to be talk tomorrow - Making my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can’t stay - Get over that old out
Ahh, but it’s cold outside

Baby it’s cold outside

Brr its cold….
It’s cold out there
Cant you stay awhile longer baby
Well…..I really shouldn’t…alright

Make it worth your while baby
Ahh, do that again….

Today I took a trip to the ICU. The intensive cuddle unit was created today. For us, it’s located in our bedroom. On the couch isn’t as intensive as the TV is a distraction.

Burt, where is your ICU?

This question goes for everyone as well. Where is your intensive cuddle unit?
