To me, business principles are tools to better organize and better engage communities. It also brings a deeper understanding of simple things like budgets, but larger issues of economic development and consumer purchasing decisions. I've always been thinking about business differently.
As a human-form mascot for Bainbridge Graduate Institute, I was challenged with bringing levity to a community of 350+. Flashmobs, skits, and costumes were regularly part of the experience.
I also remain active local & statewide committees.
I engage online regularly through social media to healthy 700+ followings.
I grew up in Commerce Twp, went to school in Kalamazoo, and live in Ann Arbor. I'm well connected to the arts scene in Detroit including CAMP art project at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival & Detroit SOUP an innovative creative funding model.
My youth was spent online in chat rooms and in web-based social situations. This enabled me to develop an uncanny ability to manage multiple conversations and interpret online communication. I regularly get complemented on my "good emails." This was eventually matched with equally active offline activity. Now, I speak frequently on the need to pair the two.
I am at home in the arts. This is a community that I relate to well.
My undergraduate thesis was in poetry.
The arts and creativity help make any task or challenge easier.
I create a bi-weekly enewsletter for The Arts Alliance. I've been able to increase click-throughs on listed content. I am also familiar with traditional press releases.
The M.B.A. gave me good grounding in marketing principles. I apply this foundation to generate useful information from focus groups, creative brainstorming, and engagement with new media.
As an undergraduate student, I led a sexual identity support group to the point of a presentation in front of all college administrators. Additinoally, my two years as an Americorps*VISTA was on a college campus. This high pressure position gave me hard experience managing students and dealing with university politics.
The past few years have been spent leading a local music education organization, Community Records L3C. This experience has brought me closer to music and it's power to bring people together. Personally, I'm a big fan of electronica/electro genres, but my tastes are quite varried. If it can get me dancing, then it's good enough for me.
I've managed many individuals including: multiple volunteer committies, program and administrative assistants, and 30 student leaders. I've also designed successful interview processes, job descriptions and have interviewed many candidates on my own.
Lastly, my M.B.A. included constant focus on leadership and team management. A skill by which I was recognized often.
I've managed grant review processes, writing and review groups, and crowdsourced ideas (Ann Arbor SOUP).
I use project management principles and electronic systems to guide content development and faster executions. I find managing information fun am often asked to design solutions.
I've designed graphics in Photoshop (or Gimp) and edited video in FinalCut Pro and iMovie.
Another useful experience is my study of micro finance/funding, micro payments, and a real life experiences with Kickstarter and IndieGoGo funding campaigns.
Metrics are fun, especially playing with social/soft metrics.
